They say that in your life, you see more of the surface of the moon than you see of earth.
This is probably true for most people.
I recently went to a training about God and me. Having grown up in a Christian community, I have seen many things of God. I thought I had covered a lot of the surface of God. Reading the Bible, singing songs, hearing sermons and listening to stories of others.
In going to this training, I was hoping to learn more of God again and afterwards, when going home, I would have seen God a bit more. On the last day, we were asked to share testimonies. I shared a small insight that I want to give space to grow in the coming days, months, years. But actually I was a bit sad that I didn’t have this huge new discovery about God. And as soon as I recognised this thought, I was given another thought.
I looked around at the other people that were there and realised I can see a little bit of God in all of them. And that is true wherever I can see Gods people. I realised, I can see God working in people. When I get to know people better, I can see a bit more under the surface. Right between skin and bone. Of course, I can only see what they show, but it is beautiful. God at work, but also God at grace, God at forgiveness, God at hope and God at joy. I know this sentence is not correct in a language way, but it is SO correct in another way.
I hope I keep this perspective for decades and more. And I want to grow in seeing the same in me. God is beautiful. In you and in me. Sometimes our eyes need to pierce through the outer skin and stop right there, at the point where the acting stops, the real comes out and the future is hopeful.
The following prayer by the apostle Paul says it all and I pray it over you, but also me, so I can dig deeper, through the surface of what I think I know about God and myself, and find new layer after layer.
“I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him, – since the eyes of your heart have been enlightened – so that you may know what is the hope of his calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the incomparable greatness of his power toward us who believe, as displayed in the exercise of his immense strength.” (Ephesians 1:17-19)
