Garden Creatures

(For I)

We were walking by the river
Hand in hand like every night
Something splashy, something hidden
Pulled you into waters deep

Quickly called out for the helpers
Fast and swiftly they arrived
Made a chain of able bodies
And we dragged you back in sight

Now we’ll always keep the memory
Of that bully of a fish
Sneaky snack was taken from him
You’re my loved one, not a dish

Life is hard as tiny creatures
Living in the London bush
Will there ever be a wedding?
You a beetle, me a moth.

I can try to make it happen
In my thoughts of make-believe
We’ll be sipping on a raindrop
Honeymoon in grandma’s leaf.
